There is a moment I have seen happen at almost every large-group team building event.
About 20 minutes in, when the energy finally breaks through the initial awkwardness, you look across the room and see 400 people genuinely laughing together.
It is one of my favourite things.
But getting there is not easy. Large-group team building requires a completely different design philosophy than small-team engagement. What works beautifully for 20 people falls flat for 200. What energises 50 people becomes unmanageable chaos for 500.
Here are 5 formats we have run successfully for large Indian corporate groups, across town halls, annual days, offsites, and hybrid all-hands events.
1. Large-Scale Team Quiz, With Live Leaderboard
A well-designed quiz is the most scalable engagement format there is. Form cross-functional teams of 6–10. Run 5 rounds simultaneously across the room or across a digital platform. Use a live leaderboard that updates after every round, the competitive energy it creates is remarkable. For groups of 1,000+, run parallel cohorts with a grand finale round.

2. Cultural Heritage Challenge
Divide employees into large teams and assign each team a different Indian state or region. They research, create, and present one aspect of that region’s culture, food, music, art, or a historical story. The diversity of India becomes the activity. We have run this for groups of 800+ and the energy in the room is extraordinary.

3. Mass Outdoor Relay or Olympic Games
For campus locations, large office complexes, or offsite venues, a structured outdoor team relay, with multiple stations running simultaneously, scales beautifully. Teams rotate through challenges. Scores aggregate on a central leaderboard. For your next corporate offsite, this format creates the kind of shared physical memory that employees talk about for years.

4. Virtual Engagement Games for Distributed Large Groups
For hybrid teams spread across cities, virtual games that run simultaneously across locations are the answer. Platform-based trivia, digital scavenger hunts, and gamified challenges can engage 1,000+ employees at the same moment, with each location team feeding into a shared leaderboard. Remote employees compete equally. Nobody is a spectator.

5. Values-Based Team Challenge
Design a challenge around your organisation’s core values. Teams earn points for demonstrating each value through creative tasks, storytelling, or collaborative problem-solving. It is engagement and culture-building simultaneously, and scales to any group size.
