Here is a question I get asked surprisingly often.
“Pooja, isn’t gamification just for kids?”
My answer is always the same.
The human brain does not stop responding to reward, recognition, and healthy competition at age 18. It just needs different packaging.
Gamification, the use of game-like elements like points, badges, leaderboards, and challenges in non-game contexts, has been quietly transforming employee engagement across Indian workplaces for the last few years. And in 2026, as India’s engagement levels hit a 4-year low, more HR leaders are turning to it as a serious strategy, not a gimmick.
Why Gamification Works
The psychology is straightforward. Human beings are wired for progress, recognition, and social comparison. When we see a leaderboard, we want to move up it. When we earn a badge, we want to earn the next one. When our team wins a challenge, we feel genuine pride.
Gamification does not manufacture motivation. It channels motivation that already exists, and directs it toward behaviours that build connection, participation, and team culture.
What It Looks Like in Practice
Indian companies using gamification effectively are not running elaborate, expensive platforms. They are starting simple.
A monthly trivia league with a leaderboard that updates in real time. A wellness streak challenge where employees earn points for daily check-ins. A festival-themed team competition during Navratri or Diwali. A values-based challenge where teams earn badges for demonstrating company principles.
The key is consistency. Gamification works when it is embedded into the rhythm of the workplace, not deployed once and forgotten.
This is exactly what we designed ExtraMile Play to do. With 180+ games across virtual, hybrid, and in-office formats, live leaderboards, personalised challenges, and real-time recognition, it is gamification built specifically for Indian corporate teams.
What to Look for in a Gamification Platform
If you are exploring gamification for your team, here is what matters most.
It has to be frictionless. If employees need a tutorial to participate, they will not participate. Look for SSO login, mobile-first design, and zero onboarding complexity.
It has to be customisable. Your company’s values, culture, and calendar should be reflected in the experience, not a generic global template.
It has to connect to real recognition. Points and badges mean more when they lead somewhere, a public shoutout, a reward, a moment of visible appreciation.
And it has to support hybrid and virtual teams equally, because remote employees deserve the same experience as those in the office.
As we explored in our piece on how AI is reshaping employee engagement, personalisation is the direction all engagement is moving. Gamification is one of the most effective tools for making engagement feel personal at scale.
The question is not whether gamification works. The question is whether you are using it.
